Empire

The Empire style was in vogue in the first half of the 19th century, and was largely influenced by the taste of Napoleon I. Its characteristic elements are the rigor of its straight lines, its architectural form and its motifs inspired by the Napoleonic campaigns and archaeological discoveries. It imposes itself throughout Europe as a neoclassical current.

Under the Empire, the frames retain a sober and symmetrical aesthetic. The most recurring motifs are plant ornaments stylized to the extreme, such as palmettes, lotus, rosettes and foliage, but also friezes of pearls and antique or Egyptian elements. Most of the time, the frame wand is not decorated over its entire length but punctuated by light reliefs alternating with a smooth background.
